VPN Setup for Windows NT

The installation procedures for VPN client installation below assume:

Install PPTP

1.  Click on the Start menu, go to Settings, click on Control Panel.

2.  In the Control Panel box, double click the Network icon.

3.  Click the Protocols tab, then click Add to display the Select Network Protocol dialog box.

3.  Select the Point To Point Tunneling Protocol and click OK

4. Click Continue in the Windows NT Setup dialog box.  The PPTP files are then copied from the installation directory specified.   The PPTP Configuration dialog box will appear.

5.  Click the Number of Virtual Private Networks drop-down arrow and select the number of VPN you need the client to support. (Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is able to support up to 256 VPNs).  If you need to connect only to Princeton's VPN, select 1.  Click OK.

6.  Click OK in the Setup Message dialog box.

7.  Click Add in the Remote Access Setup dialog box.

8.  Select the VPN1 - RASPPTPM device, click OK.   The Remote Access Setup dialog box will appear.

9. Select the VPN Port and click Configure.   Verify that Dial out only in Configure Port Usage dialog box is the only option selected.  Click OK

10.  You will now be returned to the Remote Access Setup dialog box. With the VPN Port selected in the Remote Access Setup dialog box, click Network to display the Network Configuration dialog box.

11.  Verify that TCP/IP option in Dial out Protocols is the only option checked.  Click OK

12.  Click Continue.

13.  Close the Network control Panel.   You will then be asked to restart your compuer.  Click OK.

Create a new Phone book entry for the VPN server

This assumes you already have a Phonebook entry configured to dial your Internet Service Provider.

1. Double click My Computer, double click the Dial-up Networking icon.

2.  Click New.  In the Name the new phonebook entry field type "Princeton VPN". Click Next.

3.  In the Server dialog box click I am calling the Internet.  Click Next.

4.  In the Modem or Adapter dialog box, click PASPPTPM (VPN1).  Click Next.

5.  Provide the hostname (IP address or DNS entry) of the VPN server.  Type "vpn.princeton.edu".  Click Next.

6.  Click Finish.

Establishing a connection with the Princeton VPN server

1. Double click My Computer, double click the Dial-up Networking icon.

2.  From the dialog box, choose your Internet Service Provider (ISP) option.  Click Dial.

3.  Once you are connected to your ISP, return to the Dial-up Networking dialog box.

4.  Choose the Princeton VPN option. Click Dial.

5.  Upon connection to the VPN server (vpn.princeton.edu) you will asked to provide your user name and password (your Windows domain password).
